Anna-Marie Stewart, PhD candidate
Anna-Marie’s research concerns degassing and eruption dynamics of several Ecuadorean volcanoes: Quilotoa, Tungurahua, Cotopaxi. Of these Cotopaxi and Tungurahua have been recently active and thus provide excellent natural laboratories of how degassing relates to eruption styles and mechanisms. Quilotoa volcano, while not currently active, produced a large eruption (~VEI 6) that built a caldera in 1280 AD. Anna-Marie is sleuthing how this event may have contributed considerable sulfur to the atmosphere by micro-analyzing glass inclusions and performing mass balance calculations.
